Cannot select search scope

Cannot select a scope to user for search.

Make sure that you have the appropriate provider selected. Are you searching FAST or Sharepoint and what do you have as your selection in the tool?

Just as a reminder, FQL does not support scopes which is why the scopes are grayed out when FAST is a provider.

Per the MSDN article above:
Important!
You can use the special full-text index scope filter syntax only when you define search scope filters. It is not valid FQL syntax.

I am using FAST. I do believe scopes will work with fast, but not in the same way as SharePoint search. I believe FAST limits the results to those in the scope, at query time. The big problem is that I cannot test these scopes (stemming is not used) other than through code or the UI. I was hoping to use this tool to diagnose a scope problem.
